the Dividend
Detective Strategy
We divide the universe of qualifying dividend-paying stocks into
categories and rank them based on 1) financial strength, dividend
safety, dividend growth prospects, and finally, price appreciation
potential. Here is the list of current categories:
Business Development Companies (BDCs)
BDCs provide financing to mostly
privately held, mid-sized companies. Similar to REITs and MLPs, business
development companies do not pay corporate income tax if they distribute
most of their earnings to shareholders.
Canadian Income (Business) Trusts
Stocks operating in a variety of businesses such as restaurants,
retail store and car dealerships that pay high dividends.
Canadian Royalty Trusts (CANROYs)
These oil and natural gas producers are the
favorites of investors seeking high yields.
Closed-End Funds
Our picks from this often-overlooked
category.
Dividend Speculators
High dividend payers that don't meet our
requirements for listing in our regular portfolios.
Insurance Industry
Insurers and brokers
Large Banks
Super-regional and money center banks.
Manufacturing
& Services
Industrial companies and providers of financial and other services.
Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs)
MLPs are similar to REITs except that they are not limited to real
estate. Most MLPs operate oil or other petroleum product pipelines, or
distribute natural gas and/or propane to consumers.
Monthly
Dividend Payers
Stocks, funds, and trusts that pay monthly
dividends.
Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs)
REITs, a special form of corporation investing only in real
estate, do not pay corporate income tax as long as they pay out most of
their earnings to share owners.
Regional Banks
Financially strong regional banks.
Top 50
The 50 highest dividend yielding stocks.
Oil Industry
Many
experts advise that the global economic recovery will create a shortage
of petroleum products. Here are three companies that will prosper when
and if that happens, and pay solid dividends as well.
Utilities
Electric, natural gas and water utilities.
We don't overwhelm you with lists of
hundreds of stocks. Instead, we do the research and analysis and pick
the best dividend stocks in each category.
